Latrobe

Rich in produce and history

Venture to Latrobe and you’ll be sure to spot one giant platypus. It’s a carved, wooden one that stands as an homage to the beloved critter you might be lucky to spot in nearby waterways.

The Bells Parade Reserve, located on the Latrobe inlet of the Mersey River, is a delightful area set with gazebos and old English trees – ideal for a stroll, photo opportunities, or a picnic. It’s also where you might find yourself joyfully jumping up and down upon sighting a platypus.

If you’re looking for a foray in nature, head to the Warrawee Forest Reserve which straddles the Mersey River and winds in and out of protected bushland. Suitable for both bikers and walkers, the Latrobe Council has put together this handy collection of walking circuits, which are all typically low-grade trails.

This town was settled early in Australia’s colonial history. To experience a bit of historical storytelling dating back to the town’s settlement in the 1820s, discover heritage-listed buildings that number over 70 via a local walking tour, or discover the House of Anvers chocolaterie for a bit of sweetness.
