Devonport
Gateway to the north west
Tasmania’s well-known port, and the site of your arrival to our island if you choose to take the Spirit of Tasmania from the mainland, is a seaside hub of activity. Whether you’re exploring Devonport for the day, or passing through on your way, we encourage you to enjoy what this city has to offer.
For coffee, a visit to Laneway or Fundamental Espresso is a must, while a cheeky glass of wine and produce platter can be found at the thoughtfully stocked General Store (or Tasmanian Food and Wine Conservatory, as it’s also known). Empress Craft Beer is a great spot for those looking to sample local beers. You can also venture to Ghost Rock Winery from Devonport, just a 15 minute drive east, or Spreyton Cider Co, 10 minutes south of the city.
If history is more your thing, you can visit the Bass Strait Maritime Museum, located just at the mouth of the Mersey River, to learn about the fascinating past of this region. The history goes beyond settlement: you can look for palawa (Tasmanian Aboriginal) rock carvings at the historical site where the Mersey Bluff Lighthouse has stood since 1889. Nightly, along the foreshore, you can experience the art/history display From Sea to Sky, told through a number of elements such as First Nations artwork, snow gum trees, local topographic lines, depictions of Devonport’s urban icons, and the unique rocks of Don Heads.
